Looking for your bin day? Here is the quick answer: every council around Glasgow has a free postcode lookup, and the links are all below. And if you are here because the bin lorry never came, skip down to the missed bin section, because there is a right way to deal with that too.
Check your bin collection day by postcode
Each council runs its own lookup. Click yours, type your postcode and you will get your calendar:
- Glasgow City Council covering the city centre, Southside, West End and East End
- Renfrewshire Council covering Paisley, Renfrew, Johnstone and Erskine
- East Renfrewshire Council covering Newton Mearns, Barrhead and Giffnock
- South Lanarkshire Council covering Cambuslang, Rutherglen and East Kilbride
- East Dunbartonshire Council covering Bearsden, Milngavie and Bishopbriggs
- West Dunbartonshire Council covering Clydebank and Dumbarton
Worth bookmarking, because collection days shift around public holidays and the lookup always shows the current calendar.
What the bin colours mean in Glasgow
For most houses in the Glasgow City Council area it works like this:
- Green bin: general household waste
- Blue bin: mixed recycling such as paper, card, cans and plastic bottles
- Purple bin: glass bottles and jars
- Brown bin: garden waste and food waste
Flats and tenements usually share communal bins in the backcourt instead, and some streets have food caddies, so your setup may differ. The postcode lookup shows exactly which bins apply to your address.

Missed bin? Here is what to do
- Wait until the evening. Glasgow does not count a bin as missed until it has not been emptied by 7pm on your collection day. Crews run late more often than they skip streets.
- Check for a known issue. Roadworks, parked cars blocking a lane or vehicle breakdowns all delay rounds, and the council’s online form will tell you if your street is already flagged.
- Report it quickly. Use the council’s missed bin collection form. The sooner it is logged, the sooner you are in the queue for a return visit.
- Leave the bin out and accessible. If the crew comes back to an empty kerb, that is the end of that.
- Be patient, unfortunately. The council asks you to allow up to seven days for a return visit, and says not to chase it again before then.
Seven days is a long time for a full bin, especially in summer, especially if the gulls and foxes find it first. Which brings us to the next bit.
Bin overflowing and the return visit is nowhere in sight?
We do one-off empties and extra collections across Glasgow. Call 0141 483 9985 or WhatsApp us a photo and we will sort it, usually within the week.
When it keeps happening
One missed collection is bad luck. Every other week is a pattern, and you have options beyond refreshing the council website:
- Extra capacity alongside the council round. A private collection in the gap weeks, so the bin never reaches overflowing in the first place.
- A private round of your own. We run bin collection rounds across Glasgow for homes and businesses, covering general waste, recycling, food and glass, on a schedule built around you rather than the council’s.
- For businesses especially. Trade waste is not the council’s job anyway, and every contract we run is bespoke, so you only pay for the uplifts you actually need.

Holiday and seasonal changes
Collections around Christmas, New Year and public holidays usually shift by a day or two, and the catch-up weeks can run differently as well. Before you drag the bin out on a bank holiday Monday, give the postcode lookup a quick check. The councils update their calendars in advance, and it beats a week of wondering why nobody came.
The short version
- Bin day unknown? Use your council’s postcode lookup above.
- Bin not emptied? Wait until after 7pm, then report it straight away.
- Return visit can take up to a week, so keep the bin accessible.
- Happens all the time? A private round or extra capacity fixes it for good.
- Run a business? Your waste needs its own collection contract, and that is us.
